As part of a preview for New England Patriots training camp (first practice July 30) and to re-familiarize ourselves with the roster, it's time to bring back the "checking the locks" series. Today, we continue with quarterbacks.
Sure-fire locks: Tom Brady, Jimmy Garoppolo
On the bubble: Matt Flynn
Analysis: One of the interesting parts about Flynn's presence on the roster is that the Patriots generally devote that No. 3 spot to a developmental prospect. The last time they had a veteran in the role was 2006 with Vinny Testaverde (a midseason signing), and the year before that with Doug Flutie (remember the drop kick?). So Flynn represents, in many ways, how the Patriots are preparing for all scenarios as it relates to Brady's four-game suspension -- No. 3 could quickly become No. 2. Some have asked if Flynn could press Garoppolo to start in Brady's potential absence, and I don't see that as a likely scenario. The coaching staff believes Garoppolo has made big strides this year and remains high on his potential and future. As for how the Patriots approach training camp at the position given the uncertain forecast, spring practices probably provided the roadmap they will follow -- Brady will take all the top repetitions, followed by Garoppolo, with Flynn mixed in at the end. They'll also likely give Garoppolo a chance to throw to top targets like Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski, as he did in 11-on-11 drills in mandatory minicamp.
