Ayanur Manjunath, MP, has called upon the newly elected members of gram panchayats to be creative in their functioning.

He was speaking after inaugurating a programme organised by the district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party here on Sunday to felicitate its supporters who were elected to gram panchayats. He said that the Union government provided ample funds for the construction of toilets under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and GP members should conduct a survey on households without toilets. Apart from monitoring the quality of the work implemented under the scheme, GP members should also launch cleanliness drives in villages. Members of women’s self-help groups and civil society organisations should also be involved in the drive, he added. He added that GP members should strive to bring more people under the purview of the Centre’s various social security insurance schemes for people from low and middle income groups. He said that GP members should collect information on the schemes launched by the governments for upgrading civic amenities in rural areas and make proper utilisation of the funds released under these schemes. It was necessary to keep the deadlines in preparing and submitting action plans for water supply and housing schemes, he said.
