After accomplishing the gigantic task of smooth conduct of the 12-day Maha Godavari Pushkaralu, which concluded on Saturday, the Police and Revenue officials have initiated a sanitation drive - “Swach Bhadrachalam” to remove the piled up garbage strewn in many parts of Bhadrachalam and clean up the temple town.

Several officials belonging to various government departments led by Bhadrachalam ASP R. Bhaskaran and RDO Anjaiah removed the accumulated garbage in the areas surrounding the Karakatta (Flood Bank) and the temple complex as part of the sanitation drive on Sunday.

Private workers on the job

Private sanitation workers cleared mounds of trash, including coconut shells, used water and food packets left behind by pilgrims who turned up in lakhs to the temple town during the just concluded river fete.

The special drive has been launched in the aftermath of the mega river fete to clean up the temple town and avert the danger of outbreak of epidemics. Sources said that the officials concerned reportedly barred the entry of people to the bathing ghats during the sanitation drive on Sunday.

The sanitation drive is likely to be taken up in the remaining parts of the temple town on Monday, official sources said.

Certificates to officials

Meanwhile, Collector K. Ilambarithi gave away appreciation certificates to the officials of various government departments for their meritorious services during the 12-day river fete. The Collector presented new clothes to the private sanitation workers in recognition of their crucial sanitation services during the Godavari Pushkaralu.

Superintendent of Police Shahnawaz Qasim and others were present.
