Engineering students should aspire to become technology scientists and core engineering should be their aim, said V. Natarajan, Senior Research Scientist, Naval Physical Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL), Defence Research and Development Organisation, Kochi, while addressing students of Electronics and Communication Engineering Department of K. Ramakrishnan College of Engineering. He called upon the students to take up careers in DRDO listing out numerous achievements of NPOL and indigenous capabilities of the country. Micro Electro Mechanical System (MEMS) is a technology where contributions of engineers of all branches are needed. S. Raghavan, Professor, ECE department, National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi, explained Radio Frequency MEMS (RF MEMS), Bio Medical MEMS (BioMEMS). K. Ramakrishnan, chairman, S. Kuppusamy, Executive Director, and D. Srinivasan, Principal, spoke. B. Murugeshwari and T. Muruganantham, Professors, introduced student office-bearers of the Electro Ethnarch Association.

Victorious football team

Bharathidasan University men’s football team emerged victorious in the State-level inter-university competitions organised by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu in Madurai. In volleyball, the university men’s team finished runner-up. In athletics, M. Jothi clinched the top spot in 1500 metre. Manikandan in 5000 metre and Santhosh in triple jump finished second. A. Mothi Arun bagged the third place in high jump. V.M. Muthukumar, Vice-Chancellor, Bharathidasan University, felicitated the students in the presence of A. Palanisamy, Associate Professor and sports secretary, Bharathidasan University.

Association inaugurated

The role of various engineering disciplines in military was explained by S. Krishnakumar, Senior Technical Officer, Ministry of Defence, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Chennai, while speaking at the inaugural of Computer Science and Engineering Association at Cheran College of Engineering, Karur. He motivated the students to take to robotics and artificial intelligence. K.C. Mohanraj, staff advisor of the association, introduced the office-bearers. Aasee. S. Muthusamy and T.K. Krishnamurthy, trustees, Cheran Education Trust, and S. Nithyanandam, Principal, spoke.

Recent trends in mechanical engineering

A seminar on Recent Trends in Mechanical Engineering was conducted at Mount Zion College of Engineering and Technology, Pudukottai. Jayson K. Jayabarathan, director, presided. S. Vinoth, Assistant Professor, National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi, spoke on the theory and practices of lean manufacturing. C. Sathiya Narayanan, Assistant Professor, Production Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi, explained sheet metal forming process. A. Nixon Azariah, Registrar, P. Balamurugan, Principal, and Mohan, Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department, were present.

First-year classes begin

Students should set up a goal and work hard towards achieving it, Karaikal Collector E. Vallavan said while inaugurating the first-year classes at the Government Women’s Polytechnic at Karaikalmedu near Karaikal. R. Babu Ashok, Principal, spoke about facilities available in the college. A. Rajasekaran, Executive Engineer, Public Works Department, and D. Sivakumar, Placement Officer of the Polytechnic College, Karaikal, spoke.

Plant Tissue Culture

Willmut Club of Biotechnology of J.J. College of Arts and Science, Pudukottai, organised a lecture on ‘Plant Tissue Culture - a tool for the conservation of rare, endangered and threatened plants,’ by Ramasubbu, Assistant Professor, Department of Biology, Gandhigram Rural University. He said India has a wonderful diversity of biological organisms and explained the significance of biodiversity of the Western Ghats and emphasised the need for preserving endangered plant varieties. B. Venkatesh, Head, Department of Biotechnology, was present.

Bridge course

A 10-day bridge course was conducted in ARC Visvanathan College, Mayiladuthurai, for freshers. Subject experts on English, Mathematics and HR trainers addressed the students during the course. K. Ilangovan, executive secretary, and R. Sukumar, Vice-Principal, spoke at the inaugural function.

Role of women in development

The need for participation of women in social, political and cultural development was highlighted by Caroline Lillelund, Anthropologist, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, while delivering a lecture on ‘Anthropologist perspective of social sciences,’ organised by the PG and Research Department of Commerce, AVC College, Mayiladuthurai. M. Mathivanan, Head of the Department of Commerce, was present.

Focus on personality development

The importance of time management, physical fitness and mental health was stressed by Viji Eugine, Head, Department of History, Holy Cross College, while inaugurating Part V activities of AIMAN College of Arts and Science for Women. She elaborated the important aspects of personality development. V. Subathra, Principal, was present. Around 250 first year students participated.

Free eye camp for students

Nearly 1,000 students, staff and NCC personnel underwent eye check-up at a free camp organised by the 3 (TN) Air Sqn (Tech) NCC Flight of National College in collaboration with Mahatma Eye Hospital. Wing Commander Alex Mathew, Commanding Officer, 3 (TN) Air Sqn (Tech) NCC, Tiruchi, inaugurated the camp. R. Srinivasan, Principal (in-charge), presided. K. Raghunathan, secretary and correspondent, appreciated the NCC (Air Wing) cadets.

The PG Department of Computer Science of the college organised a seminar on ‘Towards the zenith.’ K. Srinivasan, Associate Professor of English, and V. R. Mathiazhagan, Professor-in-charge, spoke.

The BBA Association of the college was inaugurated during the week. I. Francis Gnanasekar, Vice-Principal, St. Joseph’s College, spoke on ‘Perceive, visualize, design develop our digital India.’

Legal awareness camp

A legal awareness camp was organised by the Legal Literacy Club and Consumer Club of the Srimad Andavan Arts and Science College in association with the District Legal Services Authority. P.Parthasarathy, Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, delivered the special address. Advocates P.John Britto, J.Jeyachandran and S.Navaneethakrishnan elaborated on laws on human rights, environment and consumer rights. Principal J.Radhika and others spoke.
