Ample parking coming soon on Cubbon Road

Central Business District's biggest problem – that of providing parking space for your vehicle – is all set to find some respite: The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) will throw open 5,010 square metres of space on Cubbon Road for vehicular parking.

This will be the first new parking space to be opened up in the CBD in the last two decades, in close proximity to M G Road.
Tenders for selection of experienced parking contractors have been invited and 245 parking slots are to be made available: 100 for two-wheelers and 145 for four-wheelers.

This apart, there will be 10 slots earmarked for bicycles.
Though the Cubbon Road parking lot comes as a breather to motorists who are eternally harried by the lack of parking space, what comes as a shocker is the proposed parking charges: Rs 30 per hour for cars and Rs 15 per hour for two-wheelers. The hike per subsequent hour will be Rs 10 per car and Rs 5 per two-wheeler.
The rate card fixed by the metro authority states that a car owner will have to pay Rs 40 per hour after 7.30 pm. Parking fee for two-wheelers is also expensive at that time. The BMRCL has also identified space for bicycle parking, which will cost Rs 5 for the first hour and maximum of Rs 25. Unlike other places, the BMRCL does not want to restrict the parking space only for metro commuters. People visiting the Rangoli Metro Art Centre on M G Road and the general public can also make use of the parking space. BMRCL has also decided to provide space for parking of school and colleges buses, if it is feasible.
Parking space is available under the phase I project of Namma Metro at only a few stations; Baiyappanahalli, Ulsoor, S V Road, Soap Factory, Yeshwanthpur and Peenya Industrial Area being the ones. BMRLC has made major changes in fixing the rate this time. The BMRCL had fixed Rs 30 for first four hours for cars and Rs 10 for two-wheelers. However, on Cubbon Road, the base price will be applicable from the first hour itself.
An official of the BMRCL said, “Parking space cannot be made available at all metro stations because most of the stations are built on busy roads. Parking space available on Cubbon Road is spacious, making it possible for a good number of four-wheelers to be accommodated. Cubbon Road is very close to M G Road and Rangoli Art Centre where many cultural activities take place. Once it is opened for the public, a good number of people will get to use it.”

The official defended the fee that is fixed saying it is reasonable in the CBD area. The parking space is likely to benefit people during cricket matches at the Chinnaswamy stadium.
The parking space would be monitored from 5 am to 11 pm. If the police allow, there is a plan to extend this till 1 am. BMRCL may alter this timing depending on the opening and closing hours of the metro train services. The contractor will have to issue a computerised receipt and subsequently smart cards issued by the metro can also be used to pay for parking here.
