The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Saturday launched an SMS-based system of membership in Delhi University for the first time. The official membership drive will begin on Monday. Under the system, students will need to send an SMS to 9223008844, following which they will be registered as members.

ABVP national general secretary Shreehari Borikar, who was present at the launch, said the move was necessary because of the penetration of technology in the lives of youngsters.

“As technology becomes an intrinsic part of our day-to-day lives, it is most convenient for the youth to connect to the student movement by sending an SMS. That is the prime reason behind our initiative,” he said.

Festive offer

Borikar also said the number of ABVP members has risen steadily over the years, and that such “innovative” steps would attract more students. “In 2013, ABVP had around 23 lakh members. Our membership increased by around 10 lakh, reaching 33 lakh members in 2014. We expect this number to rise further this year,” he said.

Membership drives are organised by student organisations at the start of academic session in July-August every year, before the DU student union elections in September.
