Ambala jhuggi dwellers to get BPL flats

Ambala, July 26
Around 1,400 flats constructed for BPL families in Ghaseetpur village near Ambala Cantt around six years ago will be allotted to slum and jhuggi dwellers soon though residents of HUDA Sector 8 have been opposing this.
The flats were constructed under the Centre’s poverty alleviation scheme of the union government with former union minister Kumari Selja’s efforts. Only 200 of the flats have been allotted to jhuggi dwellers so far while the remaining have been lying unoccupied.
Most of the residents of these slum colonies are either rickshaw-pullers or vegetable sellers. They are happy as they would be able to get the flats at subsidised prices to be paid in instalments.
MLA Aseem Goel said though former MLA Venod Sharma had used those poor people as a vote bank, he never made any efforts for their rehabilitation. Goel said he took up the matter with the state government and flats would be allotted by next month.
