Mandya/ Belagavi/ Vijayapura: Four more farmers committed suicide in Mandya on Saturday. Lokesh, 45, hailing from Keelara village of Mandya taluk committed suicide by consuming poison in his sugarcane field. He took the extreme step as he was unable to repay his debts. He had borrowed Rs 6 lakhs from banks and private moneylenders. He had grown sugarcane on 1.20 acres and did not harvest the crop.

Following his death, his relatives staged a protest on the premises of Mandya government hospital shouting slogans against the state government and district minister MH Ambarish for failing to address farmers’ issues.
In another incident, sericulture farmer Kenchegowda hailing from Savantipura village of Malavalli taluk committed suicide by consuming poison. He had incurred heavy losses due to fall in prices of silk coccon.
In Kandenahalli village of Nagamangala taluk, Kumar, another farmer, ended life by consuming poison due to mounting debts and Kottati village Madegowda, 45, hanged himself, as he was unable to repay his loans.
Death toll reaches 11 in Belagavi
The number suicides involving famers in Belagavi district reached 11 on Saturday when Bavasab Fakruddin Yandigeri, 50, a resident of Sopadla village in Ramdurg taluk hanged himself to a tree. Yandigeri was disturbed due to crop failure. The farmer had about 5 acres of dry land and availed a loan of Rs 1.10 lakh from the State Bank of India, Rs 30,000 from PKPS Muddenur, and gold loan worth of Rs 32,000 from BDCC Ramdurg branch. He had taken some loan from people known to him.

Yandigeri had cultivated onion in an acre of land and maize and sunflower in the remaining land. The crop dried due to lack of rain and non-availability of water. Family members and residents in the locality said that Yandigeri was worried about repaying the loan as he lost crops for the third successive year.
Yandigeri is survived by two sons and two daughters. Ramdurg tahasildar TV Dasar and assistant agriculture director R D Katagal visited the spot.
Harassed by moneylender, ryot ends life A farmer committed suicide following harassment allegedly by private moneylenders in the district on Friday. Police said the deceased, Shankaragouda Annasab Biradar of Babanagar village in Vijayapura taluk, had borrowed Rs 5.65 lakh for farming activities.
It is said moneylenders on Thursday tortured him and threatened him with dire consequences if he did not return them the money. In a complaint, Anand said the threat pushed his father to suicide. Shankaragouda breathed his last BLDE Hospital, where he was rushed for treatment. In the complaint, Anand has mentioned the name of four persons, against whom police have registered cases.
