Police are appealing for witnesses after an elderly woman was punched in the head while walking her dog in broad daylight in Melbourne's south-east.

The unprovoked attack happened at a park on Leila Road in Carnegie last month.

The 75-year-old Carnegie woman was walking her dog off-leash about 1.30pm on Tuesday June 23 when she was approached by the owner of a poodle.

The man, believed to be aged in his 60s, asked if her dog was registered before verbally abusing her.

He then punched her in the head, Senior Constable Melissa Seach said.

A bystander intervened but the offender continued to hurl abuse at the elderly woman as she walked away.

The victim was injured in the assault, but it is understood she did not need hospital treatment.

The offender is perceived to be of southern European appearance, aged in his 60s, 157cm tall. He was unshaven carrying a red or orange bag.

Anyone with information about the assault is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
