Special allocation necessary: MP

July 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:40 am IST - ALAPPUZHA:

K.C. Venugopal, MP, who selected Aryad panchayat for the Sansad Adarsh Grama Yojana (SAGY), has said local area development funds will be available for the new scheme.

But he felt that special allocation of funds would be necessary as diversion of funds meant for general schemes would deprive other panchayats of their legitimate share.

“For instance, there is separate funding for Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana. The funds of it could be utilised for road development under SAGY, but such a process would be unjustified as it would result in inadequate funds for other areas,” he said.

SAGY, launched in October last year, aims at transforming villages in terms of physical infrastructure as well as harmonious co-existence, setting a model for others.

The programme requires the MPs to identify and develop one village from each constituency as a model village by 2016, and two more by 2019, covering over 2,500 of the six-lakh villages country-wide.

The scheme envisages involvement of all sections of society in all aspects related to the life in the village, with a view to ensuring well-being of even the poorest and weakest. Promoting a culture of cleanliness and mutual cooperation, self-help and self-reliance, fostering peace and harmony in the village community, bringing about transparency, accountability and probity in public life, and adhering to the values enshrined in the fundamental rights and duties of the Constitution are among the objectives of the scheme.
