K. Annamalai, Superintendent of Police (SP), said on Saturday that the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Grievance Redressal Meeting would be held every month, not just at the district level but also in all police stations of the district.
When Dalit Sangharsha Samiti (DSS) leaders complained about irregular SC/ST grievances redressal meetings at Kundapur police station, Mr. Annamalai directed sub-inspectors of all police stations to hold the meetings regularly. The redressal meeting would be held in Kundapur within two weeks, he said.
Anand Matpady, DSS leader, said that stone quarrying was going on near a Dalit colony in Matpady village. Though he had made several recommendations to the police, it had fallen on deaf ears. People were living in fear of blasts in the colony. After the monsoon started, there was nearly water in a 10-feet deep quarry, he said.
Intervening, K. Annamalai, Superintendent of Police, said that as per his information, there was no quarrying going on in the place right now. But that might be because it was the monsoon season. “I will ask the sub-inspector and also the officials of the Department of Mines and Geology to inspect the area,” he said.
Ramesh Kotian, DSS leader, said that all kinds of illegal activities were taking place in the surroundings of Ambedkar Bhavan in Udupi. There was no security guard for the Bhavan, he said.
Mr. Annamalai directed the sub-inspector to conduct regular police beats at the Bhavan. He also said that a beat register should be opened at the Bhavan.
Jayan Malpe, DSS leader, said that the police constables behaved in a rash manner with the people belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Schedule Tribes.
There were instances where police constables were getting the accused in Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act to file counter cases. This was unacceptable, he said.
K. Narayan, Dalit leader, said that the private buses were not touching the new bus stand in Byndoor. Consequently, people wanting to go to the Nada Kacheri, which was near the new bus stand, were put to a lot of hardship.
