Varsity’s erroneous certificates

Why did the degree certificates issued by Mangalore University in its 33rd annual convocation on June 17 have so many errors?

According to the talks doing the rounds in the university campus, it was because the printer was changed this year. And this printer was a relative of a Vice-Chancellor in Mysuru. So far, the certificates were being printed locally by a local printer.

But this year, the order was given to a different printer. The university authorities did not bother to check the proof as the printer was said to be the relative of a Vice-Chancellor based in Mysuru.

Though a nominated member, in the special meeting of the academic council on Saturday, asked about the errors, he did not bother to dig much into it. Though the number of certificates distributed was given as 325, the member did not ask how many certificates were actually printed, who printed it and the reasons for errors. No university authority gave their details at the meeting.

Glitches at a

unique event

Organisers of Sangama Sambrama wanted the inauguration of the-two day cultural festival at Pilkula Nisargadhama to be held in a unique way. But it did not happen the way they wanted.

The two-day cultural event involved 16 academies and authorities in language and culture.

The logo for the event had been prepared to depict the emblem of Sangama Sambrama, tied to strings held by the 16 academies as the Kannada flag unfurls.

They wanted to show this in real sense.

The heads of each of the 16 academies and authorities were asked to hold ribbons of different colours, which were attached to the emblem of Sangama Sambrama, fixed at a corner of the stage.

When the Minister of State for Kannada and Culture Umashree and MLA J.R. Lobo joined the chairpersons of academies and authorities to hold the ribbons, nobody knew what to do. The organisers then called Ms. Umashree and Mr. Lobo to stand aside and the Minister was asked to unfurl the Kannada flag.

As she unfurled the flag, the ribbons were found to be too high, blocking the faces of those on stage.

The Minister was asked to hold the flag for a minute and the ribbons were lowered to allow photographers to take images.

There is bound to be some confusion. A few were seen during inauguration of the two-day event.
