Slum residents protest against eviction bid

July 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - HUBBALLI:

Residents of Siddarameshwar Nagar slum took out a protest march here on Saturday alleging efforts by private individuals to get them evicted.

The slum is located close to the Timber Yard in Unkal. The protest was organised by the Siddarameshwar Nagar Kolache Nivasigala Horata Samiti and Socialist Unity Centre of India.

Ramanjanappa Aldalli, Laxman Jadagannavar, Gangadhar Badiger, Nagaraj Gurikar, Vasu Lamani, Yamanappa Kundaragi, Balappa Doddamani and others alleged that although the place had been officially declared as a slum, some individuals were trying to get them evicted.

They urged the municipal corporation to issue record of rights to the slum dwellers who had been living there for close to five decades so that they could take up construction of ‘pucca’ houses and also provide basic amenities.

They submitted a memorandum to the Hubballi Dharwad Mayor Ashwini Majjagi and urged her to get a resolution passed in the municipal council meeting to issue them record of rights.

Meanwhile, a municipal corporation official said it would be difficult to issue record of rights to the dwellers, as there was a court order directing the municipal corporation to provide them alternative sites. The official said that there was also a government order declaring the locality as slum and the government had been approached seeking advice.
