The construction of State Institute of Hotel Management (SIHM) at Kaveli is nearing completion and will start functioning in the next few months.
The institute, being funded by the Central government, is being built at the cost of Rs. 12 crore on five acres land allotted by the State government. The institute is affiliated to National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT).
The institute will have eight classrooms, eight labs, separate hostels for boys and girls, guest room, open cafeteria and food testing labs. It has enough lung space and priority is being given to greenery. Plantation of saplings has already been taken up outside the building and green carpets would be laid to make the institute look pleasant.
Though the classes were scheduled to begin this academic year, it was postponed as the building needed final touch up.
The institute, once starts functioning, will offer craftsmanship certificate course in food production and patisserie, craftsmanship certificate course in food and beverage service, diploma in housekeeping and other interesting subjects.
At present, 22 students are undergoing training in different courses. At present, the institute is functioning from a private property.
Once it is shifted to the new premises, three-year degree courses will be offered for which entrance will be based on the All India entrance examination.
SIHM has been catering to the needs of the local people by offering short-term courses and so far, 550 students have taken the certificate courses.
“My son who passed out of the institute is presently working at Drive Inn Multi-Cuisine Restaurant and is drawing about Rs. 15,000 salary per month. Our family is happy,” said P. Devadas of Kohir.
“The degree courses will be offered from the next academic year and we will have about 20 personnel including eight faculty members, one head of the department and one principal,” said P. Sridhar, principal.
