Delhi Police head constable was injured on Friday after he was hit by a car allegedly being driven by two men smuggling illicit liquor into the city.
The two suspects were nabbed after their car could go no further because of another vehicle on the road. Police said 29 cartons of illicit liquor were recovered from them.
The injured policeman was part of a four-member team, comprising personnel from the Patel Nagar police station and the special staff, waiting to nab the suspects. Central Delhi’s special staff had received a tip-off about the liquor smugglers.
The suspects, who were in an Alto car, were signalled to stop around 9.30 am, but they chose to flee. They were intercepted a short distance away after a chase. “Head constable Lal Singh tried to nab the suspects, but they tried to run over him. He suffered a fracture on his right leg and has been admitted to a hospital,” said Parmaditya, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central).
A senior police official said the suspects were nabbed after their vehicle was forced to come to a halt because of a private Swift Dzire car on the road. While one policeman rushed to his injured colleague, two others pulled the suspects out of the car. The car has been seized and a case in this connection been registered at the Patel Nagar police station.
The suspects, identified as Jagpal and Veerpal, are believed to be residents of Najafgarh.
“We interrogated the suspects and they have confessed to regularly smuggling liquor from Bahadurgarh in Haryana to Patel Nagar. A woman is believed to be the kingpin of the illicit trade. We are on the lookout,” said the officer.
