Former Delhi government standing counsel for criminal matters advocate Salim Ahmed will now be defending Jagriti Singh, wife of ex-BSP MP Dhananjay Singh, who is currently facing trial over charges of murder of their domestic help.
Till the end of May this year, Ahmed was the standing counsel for the Delhi government and represented the Delhi Police before the Delhi High Court. However, he said he had not appeared in court during the hearing on the former MP’s bail plea.
“I was the standing counsel but I did not handle this case,” Ahmed said, adding that it was the “professional duty” of a lawyer to represent clients.

“I was approached to represent her (Jagriti), so I am doing so. It has nothing to do with my previous position,” he said.
The Delhi Police had chargesheeted the couple in February last year, after the body of their domestic help Rakhi (35) was recovered from their residence on November 4, 2013 with injury marks on the legs, chest and arms.
The chargesheet alleged that Jagriti used to beat her three domestic helps mercilessly. It is also alleged that they were not allowed to visit their hometowns, leave the flat, or even talk to their families due to “constant torture and surveillance”.
On June 6 this year, Dhananjay was put on trial by the court for the offence of destruction of evidence.
Jagriti is facing trial for charges including murder (section 302), voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means (section 324), and under other sections of the IPC.
