'Journey' PS4 Review: Even More Stunning Than Before

Following
This article is more than 8 years old.

Journey was a beautiful game when it released on PS3 in March of 2012. The art style was striking and unique, and the original score by composer Austin Wintory was not only lovely, it fit the game like a glove.

Journey is the closest to enchanting that I've ever played in a video game. It's one of the only games I love to watch other people play just as much as I enjoy playing it myself.

Now the game is out on PlayStation 4, and it looks and feels even better. When I last played the game, just months ago, on PS3 it had been the first time in a while. In fact, I'd been playing a lot of PS4 and Xbox One and PC and Wii U  and not much, if any, on PS3 or Xbox 360. The graphics were still great, but the jagged edges and lower resolution was more apparent than I remembered.

Firing up Journey on PS4 is a delight. It's so gorgeous and fluid in 1080p and 60 frames-per-second. Even though that's really the only thing different about it, it's a wonderful experience. If you've never played Journey before, I can't recommend it enough. Without spoiling anything, it's a very short game that you'll want to play all in one sitting. And then you'll want to go back and play it again. If you're at all like me, you'll play it every now and then and its delightfulness will never wear thin.

If you've already played the game on PS3, I say go play it again on PS4. It's free if you purchased the PS3 version digitally, and worth the fifteen bucks if you didn't. It's a simple remaster, but it makes a work of art all the more beautiful and immersive. I give it a resounding Buy on my Buy/Sell/Hold scale. It's a wonderful game for players of any skill level or experience, and even for non-gamers. Everyone should experience it.
