Johannesburg - A 15-year-old girl was shot dead in Benoni, and four other teenagers and an adult injured after four people arrived at their house demanding drugs, Gauteng police said.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale said the four entered a woman's home in Kingsway street and demanded drugs from her.
They then made her stand outside and herded the four children and the other adult into another room.
She heard shots ringing out and later discovered that the group had shot the 15-year-old girl dead, shot a 16-year-old girl on the knee, poured boiling water on to a 16-year-old boy.
They also used a rifle butt to hit a 17-year-old boy and a 24-year-old woman.
After that, they fled from the scene.
Mogale said police think the brutal attacks might be related to illegal mining because equipment using in the mining underworld was confiscated by police.
Benoni police are investigating a case of murder, attempted murder, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Although a manhunt was underway, police asked for tip-offs to be relayed to them on 0860 010 111.
Illegal mining appears to be a burgeoning industry in South Africa with police regularly confiscating crudely mined gold, or paramedics being called to rescue an illegal miner after the collapse of one the warren-like tunnels of the abandoned or closed mines on the gold mining belt.
