Xavier College of Ba last night won the Kula Dance competition at FMF Gymnasium in Suva.

Fifteen schools participated.

Queen Victoria School was the first runner-up.

Khalsa College was second runner-up.

The Attorney-General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, presented the prizes.

Other winners: Best female dancer – Xavier College; Best male dancer – QVS; Most popular dance group – Khalsa College; Best Dance Group – Xavier College.

The competition was organised by Film Fiji.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the country needed more people in the hospitality industry.

He said the country and the economy were growing.

He said: “This morning (yesterday), I was at Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort where they had cooking competition for the high school students.”

He said: “I know most parents want their children to become doctors, lawyers and engineers but what I have said there was that no profession is any better than the other one.”

“Tonight we know we may have people who are good dancers and there indeed could be their profession they could go on to become professional dancers, singers and professional performers.”

He urged students, parents, teachers and members of the community to support those who wanted to be in the tourism industry.

He thanked the CEO, staff and board of Film Fiji for organising the Kula Film Competition.

Today is Kula Film awards night at Suva Civic Center.
