Lifeguards to be deployed 24x7 on beaches

The government will take steps to deploy lifeguards round-the-clock along the beaches, including Kovalam, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said.

Replying to a submission of Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan in the Assembly on the recurring death of tourists in Kovalam, Mr.Chandy said that lifeguards were deployed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The tourism police too had been posted on the beaches to prevent such incidents, Mr. Chandy said.

In the wake of such accidents, the government would deploy lifeguards round-the-clock, he said.
