INDORE: Emphasizing on the need of practical education, schools affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) are devising new ways to impart practical knowledge to primary students. A gamut of activities has been included in the school curriculum to imbibe life skills.
The board has time and again advised schools to focus on providing practical based education to students right from grass root level i.e.
primary classes. Informing about practical learning in primary section, academic coordinator at Emerald Heights International School, Anamika Singh said, “Earlier, students used to access labs in higher classes but now primary students have practical labs for each and every subject. For subjects like English and Hindi, chapters are taught through the medium of plays and dramas. To develop grammar skills, students are imparted lessons in audio-visual room wherein they are made to learn pronunciations, accents, use of punctuation marks and language syntax. Such practice helps in boosting confidence level of the students”.
Another school, which has included life skills in curriculum, is Advanced Academy. Headmistress Timsi Rai said, “Filling a bank form or lodging a complaint at police station is not taught in any school. To equip students with life skills, we impart practical knowledge by organizing various activities at school. Sometimes we set up a judiciary system wherein students enact various roles and get a knowhow of functioning of banks, courts, police stations, factories etc. This provides them exposure and they get to learn things well.”`
Girija Kumar from SICA School said, “Primary section celebrates all the festivals and mythological tales related to festivals and knowledge about all religions are provided to students. Besides, to inform students about the importance of cleanliness, hygiene and rainy season will be observed in school.”
