The four lads were going to school in Chembur when, on hearing a woman shout, one grabbed the accused’s arm, another his leg. With help they pinned him down, while the others fetched the cops.

Four Std IX students foiled a chain snatching in Chembur on Friday morning and wrestled the 21-year-old suspect to the ground with the help of passersby, earning praise from citizens and the police.

After the heroic act, Salman Khan, Vijay Patil, his brother Ajay and Sanket Sathe — all students of a Chembur municipal school — attended their class like any other day.

The four teenagers, who came to the rescue of a 39-year-old woman, were felicitated by deputy police commissioner (zone VI) Sangramsingh Nishandar later on Friday.

The four boys, aged 15, were on the way to school when they heard BMC employee Nita Kamble’s cries for help around 6.30 am. Chain snatcher Ashfaq Sheikh had just grabbed Kamble’s 13-gram gold chain outside Dutta Mandir, near Chembur railway station, and was attempting to flee.

Salman and Vijay blocked Sheikh’s path; while one grabbed his arm, the other latched on to his leg. Passersby then joined in, helping the two boys to pin Sheikh down.

Ajay and Sanket, in the meantime, headed to the nearby police chowky. They spotted a police van and alerted the officers inside. Sheikh was arrested by the Tilak Nagar police.

“We heard a woman scream ‘chor, chor’ and the next moment, we saw a man running towards us. We realised we could stop him; we were not scared,” Vijay said. “Salman and I got hold of him. Others then helped us to restrain him till the police arrived.”

Senior inspector BS Sonawane of the Tilak Nagar police station praised the four brave teens for showing presence of mind and blocking the suspect’s path.

DCP Nishandar said that a police initiative called ‘School Connect’ in zone VI had helped in creating awareness about policing among students. Sessions on the police’s role and duties were conducted in 149 schools. “The four boys told me that they had attended a lecture conducted by the police three days ago and the session had inspired them,” Nishandar said.
