SURAT: More than two lakh households of Vesu, Pal and Palanpur area will be getting 24x7 metered water supply by March 2016. People have been asked to apply before March 2016 to avail benefit of payment in installments for new connections.
Additional city engineer, K H Khatwani, said, “A consultant will be appointed for the network design and work would begin in few months.
We have already floated tenders for pumping station augmentation work.”
At present SMC is the only municipal body that supplies metered water to new areas of the city like Kosad and Mota Varachha. However, with limited supply in the day, it doesn’t serve the purpose.
“In these (Vesu, Pal and Palanpur) areas, we plan to supply round the clock metered water and charges will be collected according to household usage,” said Khatwani.
Currently, SMC supplies 1,045 MLD (million liters per day) of water to 16 lakh households.
It is expected that with the metered water becoming mandatory, number of illegal water connection will be weeded out.
At present, SMC charges for water for every property tax bill.
Under the Smart City master plan for water network, SMC has covered the issue of water supply. “In Smart City master plan, we have covered issues like individual users, quantity of supply, minimum of wastage and quality of supply. We plan to bring every user under metered connection so he will have to pay up only for what he uses,” said SMC commissioner Milind Torwane.
