AHMEDABAD: Finally, the city police has swung into action to crack down on the menace of gangs operating in eastern parts of the city, especially in areas like Khokhra, Odhav, Amraiwadi, Ramol, Naroda and Vatva.
City police chief Shivanand Jha has asked the cops to take strict action within seven days. The police action will be imitated under the code name of “Operation Rakshak”.

Jha on Thursday summoned all senior police officials of the city including deputy commissioner of police, (crime branch) Dipen Bhadran and directed them to act against the gangs of eastern Ahmedabad and also drug dens in Patva Sheri area of the walled city.
It is noteworthy that more than nine gangs are operating in some of the areas of eastern Ahmedabad. “The most notorious of them are the Fracture gang, Kanchinda Gang, Madrasi Gang and Sittu gang” said a police official.
Senior police officials said the use of the firearm in Odhav in which gunshots were fired on the office of a former member of Fracture gang and the recent incident of shootout in Patva Sheri of the walled city is a worrying factor.
Jha said he has asked his subordinates to crack down on gun runners who bring firearms from Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh and sell it in the city.
“I have given a deadline of seven days to the police to give me results. Gangs and hooligans will not be allowed to have a free hand to create menace in the city” added Jha.
Senior police sources said the cops have also been directed to act against drug mafias operating from the walled city area.
“Local police has been asked to take action against anti-social elements under section 110 of the Crpc, under which the person has to tender bonds of a third person. These would prove effective” said Jha.
