The Hassan City Municipal Council on Thursday demolished a structure, constructed illegally in its site and recovered the property, estimated to be worth Rs. 65 lakh. Manju, alias Bangari Maju, former member of the CMC, had allegedly constructed a godown in the 2.500-sq. ft. site at Hunasinkere Layout.

V.H. Krishnamurthy, CMC Commissioner, told The Hindu that the site had been encroached upon for the last 15 years. “The former council member owned a site in the layout and encroached upon the adjacent site belonging to CMC. All these years, he was using the property. When we began the drive, he came with some documents to claim ownership. But, the records were insufficient. We have the documents to establish our ownership of the land,” he said.

Mr. Krishnamurthy said, his officials had identified similar encroachments in the city and the CMC would continue the drive on removing them.
