Thousands of striking municipal employees staged a protest in front of the residence of TRS MLA Konda Surekha at Ramnagar in Hanamkonda on Thursday.

Earlier, the agitating employees took out a rally from Ambedkar statue. Rising slogans against the State government and leaders, they marched to the residence of the MLA. Police tried to prevent them but in vain. This resulted in mild tension in the colony for a while.

The protesting employees have been demanding enhanced wages and regularisation of services, besides other welfare measures.

Addressing the gathering, CITU city general secretary R. Ramesh, T. Uppalaiah, A. Dharma Raju and others said that though about 40,000 municipal employees have been on strike since July 6, the government failed to address their concerns. K. Chandrasekhar Rao is focusing only on Hyderabad, they alleged. “The employees are on strike for the past 18 days. Not a single MLA or Minister from the district responded to the demands of municipal workers. We want to draw the attention of MLAs and pressurise them to bring our protest to the notice of the Chief Minister,” the leaders said.

The employees vowed to continue their stir till all of their demands are conceded by the State government.
