3.9 quake rattles Gondia district
Nagpur: A mild earthquake rattled Gondia district in eastern Vidarbha late Thursday setting alarm bells off in almost entire district. People came out of their houses in open spaces and made frantic calls to each friends and kin elsewhere. The social media was also flooded with messages soon after.
Indian Meteorological Department said the quake measured 3.9 on Richter scale and had Gondia as its epicenter.
It occurred at 8.06 pm. The duty officer at the IMD office, New Delhi, Ajay Kumar told TOI it was recorded at 21.4 degrees north and 79.9 degrees east and was at a depth of 10 km.
The quake was felt by many citizens in Gondia city as well as neighbouring places like Tiroda. An engineer in power station at Tiroda Shridhar Pol told TOI he felt the tremors around between 8.15 pm while having dinner. “I live on the first floor. When I went down to talk to the landlord I was told his 14-year-old daughter fell down from the sofa she was sitting on as the earth rattled. The tremors lasted only 23 seconds,” he said. Kanchan Singh, also from Tiroda, told TOI she felt the tremors.
Reports of tremors came also from Mulla, Barbaspura, Mundikota, Goregaon, and Salekasa. It is learnt officials of Zilla Parishad in Gondia, who were in a meeting, ran out of the chamber when they felt the earth shake. BDO Dilip Gawade was one of the persons who was attending the meeting and shared his experience with media.
It had been raining the entire day in Gondia. Citizens claim the tremors were felt twice. Some said they felt the tremors exactly at 8.08 pm in Amgaon taluka where the intensity was highest. There were reports of some temporary sheds falling but those could not be confirmed. There are no reports of any casualties or big damage to property. It is learnt some tremors were also felt in the neigbouring district of Bhandara.
Earlier in the day a mild quake measuring 2.9 Richter scale was recorded near Sindhudurg on the south western tip of the state at 11.34 am. This quake was recorded at a depth of 9 km at 74.0 degree east and 15.8 degrees north, IMD sources said.
