Aadhaar: NRI booked for registering pet cat

Police said the case was registered against Azeez Abdulla, an NRI from Kasaragode, and a female staffer at Akshaya Centre, an IT-enabled services delivery centre.

Abdulla, who is employed in the Gulf, wanted to take his Persian cat with him abroad. When a travel agent told him that the cat would need some valid identification documentation for a trip overseas, he decided to apply for an Aadhaar card for his pet.

The staffer at the centre accepted the application form for the cat, which was given a fake name.

She also got its photo uploaded in the form and completed other required formalities.

Police sources said after the applicant got queries from UIDAI officials, Abdulla tendered an apology.

Police said the accused claim they tried to get an Aadhaar card for the cat out of ignorance.

They have not been arrested so far. The duo are likely to face charges under IPC sections of 465 (forgery), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating) and 471 (using as genuine a forged document).
