Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi landed in Tamil Nadu’s Trichy on Thursday to train his guns on the state’s ruling party for failing to protect the Dalits. In his first visit to Tamil Nadu after the Lok Sabha poll debacle, Rahul paid tribute to former CM K Kamaraj on his birth anniversary and accused the state’s political parties for having a nexus with the liquor lobby.

Remembering Kamaraj, Rahul said: “He truly believed that education is the tool to overcome  poverty. Kamaraj believed that the people of Tamil Nadu had answers and that made him reach out to the people. That was 50 years ago. Today, leaders here are not listening to the people as they have power and they think that they need not listen to you.”

Rahul also joined the prohibition debate two days after DMK announced that it will implement total prohibition if elected to power in the state. Rahul blamed the state’s  liquor policy for destroying families.

“The Congress understands the problems of mothers of Tamil Nadu. We will fight and ensure that there is an end to all these sufferings,” he said, adding that regional parties of Tamil Nadu will never object to the state’s current liquor policy as they themselves got a share of the liquor revenue. He accused the Jayalalithaa government for listening to only to a certain section of people and the lobbies of liquor and other sectors.

Festive offer

Promising to come out with a liquor policy after listening to people’s demands, he said: “It will be in your favour. There will be fast track courts to check atrocities too. Help us bring bring back Kamaraj’s golden rule.”
Over 40,000 people packed the venue undeterred by rain.
