In no mood to back down on its decision to appoint Gajendra Chauhan at the helm of Film & Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, the government on Thursday decided to accept the resignations of Jahnu Barua, Santosh Sivan and Pallavi Joshi from the FTII Society. The trio had put in their papers expressing displeasure over the government’s handling of the student protest against Chauhan.
“Yes, we have decided to accept the resignations of Barua, Sivan and Joshi,” a government source told The Indian Express. The decision, sources in the Information & Broadcasting Ministry said, is a “well-considered one” and has been arrived at with the intention to send out a message.

According to sources, while the government first considered having a dialogue with these three personalities in a bid to try and convince them to continue at the institute, it eventually decided to go ahead with the decision to accept their resignations.
Meanwhile, as the protesting students continued their agitation, Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore on Thursday said that it is “in the interest of students that if they have a viewpoint, which they have, they must not block classes for it”.
“…a group of students is always welcome to continue discussions with us,” Rathore said.
