PM to launch Rs 73,000 crore rural electrification scheme on July 25

New Delhi, Jul 23 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be launching Rs 73,000 crore Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) aimed at providing 24- hour power supply to rural households,on July 25. Modeled on a similar scheme in Gujarat, the DDUGJY will be launched from Patna with Rs 5,827 crore approved for poll-bound Bihar out of Rs 14, 680 crore for the entire country cleared so far. The flagship rural electrification reforms scheme of the Union Power Ministry focuses on setting up separate feeders for rural households and agricultural consumers besides strengthening of sub-transmission and distribution infrastructure, including metering at all levels. ‘’This will help in providing round the clock power to rural households and adequate power to agricultural consumers,” the Power Ministry said in a statement. The existing Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY) has been subsumed in the new scheme as its rural electrification component. The scheme has an outlay of Rs 76,000 crore for implementation of the projects under which the Centre will provide grant of Rs 63,000 crore . ‘’An agriculture intensive state like Bihar would benefit from works of feeder separation. Thousands of kilometres of new lines shall be laid and hundreds of new substations have been planned. The implementation of this scheme shall ensure the improvement in agricultural productivity and electrification of all the households,” the statement said. The major components of the scheme are feeder separation; strengthening of sub-transmission and distribution network and metering at all levels (input points, feeders and distribution transformers. The rural agricultural and non-agriculture consumers are generally serviced through the local distribution network. Many areas face insufficient electricity supply with the result that the distribution utilities are forced to resort to load shedding. In the absence of feeder separation, the load – shedding spreads across both households and agriculture consumers. The investment in the distribution network is low due to bad financial health of the distribution companies. Therefore in order to augment the reliability and quality of supply distribution network needs to be strengthened , which would be done through DDUGJY. The spin off benefits include regular power supplies to banking ATMs, communication channels like telephone, TV and internet. UNI PC RN RJ RAI1843
