Kota Kinabalu: State Sukma karatekas have the chance to shine on a bigger stage when three of them together with four others will be taking part in the Thailand Open Karate Championship to be held from July 28-30.Sabah Karate Association secretary general and head coach Julian Chin said on Wednesday that the trio, Audrey Japyus (senior female kumite +68kg), Vellenda Agustine (senior female individual kata) and Mohd Zairam Zainal (senior male kumite -67kg) with Eldrich Aaron Jubili (boy 12/13-year-old individual kate & kumite -48kg), Lovelly Anne Robberth (girl 10/11-year-old individual kate & kumite -38kg), Cairola Cheverry Wong Yee Ying (girl cadet individual kate & kumite -54kg) and Su Ming Wei (boy 12/13-year-old individual kata) are expected to have a tough task ahead with the strong opponents in the competition.

"We do not set any medal target for them. We understand that it is going to be tough for them because national athletes from Thailand, Vietnam, Korea, Indonesia, Laos, Mynmar, Japan and Malaysia as well as some European countries are set to take part.

"However, the positive aspect of this trip is that it will provide a great opportunity for our athletes to gain exposure especially the three Sukma athletes and we hope they will produce their best and learn how to compete in an international arena and we only hope they will return with some medals."

Meanwhile, Cairola who won the only silver for the contingent last year in the individual kata said she hopes to do even better this year despite the strong field.

"I lost to a Thai exponent last year. I know it won't be easy with the tough competition ahead but I will try my very best for the State and hopefully can do better this time," she said.

Cairola has been training at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex in Likas with the three Sukma athletes under coach Danny Fredoline who will travel with the team together with Julian as the chief delegate as well as two other coaches Jacqueline Yong and Mui Ling Tiwon.

He said it is a twice a day training session for the four athletes and it is going smoothly while the other three juniors according to him train on their own with their respective coaches as they have to attend school.
