KANPUR: A man was burnt alive at Kaithan Kheda village under the limits of Ajgain police station of Unnao district on Tuesday for filing a police complaint against village goons who were stalking and harassing his teenage daughter. The accused have been arrested.
According to police, the three accused - Pappu, Kali Charan and Fatte – of the same village had tried to molest his daughter on July 8.
“Ram Sevak, 45, had filed a complaint against the trio on July 15 for harassing his daughter. The accused burnt him alive late on Tuesday night,” said SHO Ajgain Dharmendra Singh Raghuvanshi.
“The trio attacked Ram Sewak when he had left his house for nearby fields for some work. They caught him in the fields and thrashed him severely. They then poured petrol on him and set him afire following which he jumped into a water-filled pit,” the SHO informed.
Villagers rushed to the place on hearing his cries and alerted the police control room.
“Control room cops later apprised us. We rushed Ram Sevak to the district hospital from where he was referred to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital in Kanpur. He died during treatment on Tuesday night. He had suffered 90 per cent burns,” the officer added.
“The victim’s family has filed an FIR against Pappu, Kali Charan and Fatte, who have been arrested,” he said.
The victim’s kin, meanwhile, blamed police negligence for the gruesome incident.
“They had first tried to molest the girl in April. When we offered resistance, they had beaten and threatened us with dire consequences. My husband had visited the state capital and met senior officials. But despite that, the police didn’t arrest the three. Had the police shown some alacrity, such an incident would have never taken place,” said Asha, the victim’s wife.
