Did cops cold-shoulder abducted officer?
A senior Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS) officer, who was allegedly abducted from outside the Lokayukta's residence and released after Rs 10 lakh was extorted from him in September last year, had approached police seeking justice, but in vain.
The KAS officer approached top Lokayukta officials and apprised them of his harrowing experience. "I got a call on my mobile phone from Lokayukt a Bhaskar Rao's official residence.
The person at the other end introduced himself as the Lokayukta's PA and directed me to come immediately. When I reached he gate, four men directed me to sit inside a black Ford and drove me till Hoskote," Lokayukta sources quoted he officer as saying.
According to sources, the group demanded Rs 1 crore bribe to prevent raids on him. "Your name figures in many land-grab cases and we know you have made huge money. If you give us Rs 1 crore, we'll make sure there's no Lokayukta raid against you. Else, files will move swiftly and you've had it," the KAS officer quoted the abductors as saying. The officer managed to strike a bargain and the final ransom was fixed at Rs 10 lakh. However, he was neither blindfolded nor threatened at gunpoint, the sources added.
The officer said he approached Amruthahalli police two days later but the inspector told him that bigwigs seemed to be involved and tried to dissuade him from filing a complaint. "I then met DCP (north-east) Vikas Kumar Vikas who promised a fair investigation but without registering a complaint," the KAS officer was quoted as saying.
Vikas, however, told TOI: "I did not receive any such complaint." Police commissioner MN Reddi also said no complaint was received. "It's a baseless statement. Had the officer approached the inspector or the DCP, there would have been a case without fail," he said.
The KAS of ficer now plans to approach the SIT probing the Lokayukta extortion scandal.
