Transgenders play havoc on EMU trains

They slap school girl, bite youth for not giving money

Chennai: In two separate incidents on EMU trains running between Chengalpet and Chennai Beach a school girl and a 25-year-old youth were physically attacked by transgenders when the victims refused to shell out money to them. According to police, a teenaged girl was slapped by a transgender in a moving train going from Chengalpet to Beach after the train left Potheri station on Thursday morning. She was travelling in the ladies compartment when two transgenders started collecting money from passengers.

When the girl refused to meet their demand, they initially abused her in vulgar fashion and when she confronted them, she was slapped. The incident left other woman passengers in a state of shock, who started shouting at them. By the time the train reached Oorapakkam, male passengers from other compartment reached the ladies compartment hoping to overpower the transgenders. The two, however managed to wriggle out from the scene. Later, the father of the girl was informed who took his daughter back home while other passengers lodged a complaint with the Tambaram police station.

In the other incident, a 25-year-old youth of Old Pallavaram traveling in a Tambaram- Beach EMU was bitten on his shoulder by a transgender when he refused to part with money. “The transgender tried to take the purse from the youth’s pocket. When he objected to this, the transgender then bit him on his shoulders and later escaped after jumping off when the train reached Pazhavanthangal railway station. The youth too got down from the train and travelled to Tambaram to lodge his complaint with the railway police.

Railway police officials however claimed that dealing with transgenders had become a major problem for them. “They hardly obey any rule and become regular nuisance in moving trains as well as on platforms. Even when we arrest them, they surface again and commit the same offence,” the police said.
