The Kisan Cell of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) will submit its interim report on farmers’ suicides to the Chief Minister, the KPCC president and the party’s Karnataka-in-charge on Thursday.
Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, president of the Kisan Cell Sachin Miga, who has been touring various districts in the State where farmers’ suicides have been reported, said that the interim report had been prepared based on the findings during the visit to 10 districts.
Mr. Miga said that based on the directions of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, KPCC president G. Parameshwara and Karnataka-in-charge Digvijay Singh, the cell members had so far visited the houses of 46 deceased farmers in 10 districts.
Many young victims
Mr. Miga said that during the visits, they had found that a large number of young farmers had committed suicide, and the lacunae in the crop insurance scheme was also contributing factor for the farmers’ suicides.
Crop insurance
He said that while farmers paid crores of rupees for availing themselves of the crop insurance, they were not getting the relief because of the lacunae in the scheme. Mr. Miga took exception to the practice of considering hobli as a unit while fixing compensation and said that they would urge the Union government to rectify the lacunae in the interests of the farmers.
Mr. Miga said failure to get water after borewells are sunk also contribute to farmers’ suicides. “We have found farmers invest to sink borewells and incur loss owing to failure to get water. We will recommend the government to take up the work on sinking of borewells and bear the expenses,” he added.
