Three college students were killed and another two critically injured after the bikes they were riding on were hit by a speeding car in Nigdi early Wednesday morning, police said. The accused, 29-year-old Mayur Ramesh Ghumatkar, has been arrested with police now waiting for the medical report to ascertain whether Ghumatkar was driving in an inebriated condition.
According to Nigdi police, the accident took place around 1.30 am when the five victims, all students of IICMR College in Nigdi, were on their way to have tea after having gathered at one of their friend’s house for studies.
Ghumatkar rammed his speeding car near old Nigdi octroi naka into the two bikes on which all five were riding, leaving three of them dead on the spot, police said, and identified the three deceased as Kiran Dilip Dahane (24) from Satara, Sanket Kamlakar Samel (23) from Khopoli and Shubham Sambhaji Bhalekar (23) from Parner in Ahmednagar district.
The two injured, Avinash Mane and John Vidyayati, both from Nigdi, are undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Inspector Amar Waghmode of Dehu Road police station said that the driver of the car broke the lane and hit the two motorcycles from behind.
The three deceased were to finish their MCA course in six months’ time and had been selected for jobs under the recruitment drive at the college campus. Their bodies have been handed over to their families after the post-mortem, police said.
