Shane Mosley Jr. temporarily suspended following failed drug test

Middleweight Shane Mosley Jr., the son of former three-division world champion Shane Mosley, has been issued a temporary suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for failing a drug test following his appearance on the Big Knockout Boxing pay-per-view card on June 27 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

Mosley knocked out Jason Kelly in 51 seconds but tested positive for amphetamines, which are banned.

Shane Mosley Sr., while never failing a drug test, testified under oath to a grand jury investigating the Victor Conte BALCO scandal that he had taken undetectable steroids "the clear" and "the cream" and injected himself with EPO sold to him by Conte during training camp for his 2003 rematch with Oscar De La Hoya. Mosley scored a controversial decision win for the junior middleweight world title.

Shane Mosley Sr. never faced any punishment because he never failed a test, and his usage didn't become public knowledge until years later. But his son will be forced to miss at least two scheduled bouts.

Mosley Jr. was scheduled to fight on the Sergey Kovalev-Nadjib Mohammedi undercard on Saturday night at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, but he was scratched from the card several days ago when the commission received the test results.

He was also supposed to fight on the undercard of his father's Aug. 29 rematch with Ricardo Mayorga at the Forum in Inglewood, California, but that will also be canceled because of the failed test.

Mosley Jr. faces a hearing in front of the Nevada commission, at which time he will be allowed to explain the test results. He is likely to be given an extended suspension and fined a portion of his $25,000 purse.

Bob Bennett, the executive director of the Nevada commission, told ESPN.com on Wednesday that the hearing probably would take place at the panel's August or September meeting "barring any attorney's request for a continuance."

Heavyweight Julian Pollard, who won a seven-round unanimous decision against Rodney Hernandez in the main event of the BKB card, also was temporarily suspended for failing his drug test.

Bennett said he tested positive for the stimulant Methylhexaneamine. He also will have a hearing at an upcoming Nevada commission meeting and faces a lengthy suspension and a fine for a portion of his $40,000 purse.

Bennett said Mosley and Pollard have been informed of their failed tests.
