Several Hollywood studios are getting ready to release their first movies in Dolby Cinema.
Sony’s July 24 release Pixels, Universal’s September opener Everest and Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2, in theaters this November, will all have a release in Dolby Cinema, a premium large-format theatrical experience that combines the Dolby Vision high-dynamic-range laser projection system with Dolby Atmos immersive sound.
Also coming up is Paramount’s first Dolby Cinema release, Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation, as previously reported in The Hollywood Reporter. Twentieth Century Fox is also planning such releases. “We are excited to see major studios like Lionsgate, Paramount, Sony, Fox and Universal release their first Dolby Vision titles,” said Doug Darrow, senior vp cinema at Dolby.

The rollout of Dolby Cinema is just getting underway. Disney’s Tomorrowland, which opened in May, was the first theatrical release, followed closely by Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out and Warner Bros.’ San Andreas.
The Chris Columbus–directed Pixels is Sony Pictures’s first release in the format. “Pixels is one of the most visual effects-rich movies I’ve ever been involved with — the video game elements pixelate and glow with energy, making the stunning visuals an ideal movie for the Dolby Cinema experience,” said the film’s producer, Michael Barnathan. “Our team was incredibly excited to collaborate with Dolby on color grading and sound mixing the movie with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. The combination of amazing sound and vibrant imagery — bright, clear and full of color — makes Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, and the rest of the arcade game characters larger than life on the big screen.”
Dolby Cinema or Dolby Vision projection is currently installed in roughly 10 cinema auditoriums worldwide, plus early Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime locations. Roughly 100 AMC Prime locations are expected to be converted by 2024.
