Demanding an explanation from Rajkot Municipal Corporation over missing 292 cattle from its cattle pool, Congress corporator Vashram Sagathiya observed a day-long fast on Wednesday. However, civic officials said the matter was being investigated by vigilance department.

Sagathiya set up a tent near the gate of RMC office in Dhebar Chowk and sat on dharna throughout the day, demanding civic body make public details of 292 cattle which have gone missing from its pool. During his visit to the cattle-pond on 19th June, the Congress corporator had found that 290 calves of cows and two buffalo calves had were missing from the pond.

“In-charge officer of the the cattle pond has confirmed to us that 292 cattle are missing. He has reported the matter to higher authorities. We had submitted a memorandum to deputy municipal commissioner Chetan Nandani on June 20 in this respect and he had assured us to give a reply within two weeks. However, we have not received any response till day,” Sagathiya said.

The corporator further said that most of the cattle which are missing are gau vansh and, being a Hindu, it is important for him know what has happened with them.

“After we did not receive any response from the deputy municipal commissioner, we wrote to the municipal commissioner. But there is no reply from the office of the commissioner as well,” added Sagathiya.

Leader of opposition in RMC, Gayatriba Vaghela, Congress MLA from Rajkot East, Indranil Rajyaguru and other congress leaders joined Sagathiya in the fast for some time.

However, Nandani said he was not bound to reply to the corporator. “It is not required t ogive a reply (to the memorandum). It is absolutely not required. However, the municipal commissioner has ordered a vigilance inquiry in the matter and the inquiry is on,” Nandani told The Indian Express.
