The Tunisian saw off American Austin Krajicek 6-7 (5/7) 6-2 6-4.
Elsewhere in the first round, Marcelo Demoliner of Brazil beat Ukraine's Illya Marchenko 6-3 7-5 and Japan's Tatsuma Ito saw off Australia's Matthew Ebden 1-6 6-3 6-4.
Alexander Sarkissian overcame John Millman 6-3 6-3 and Radek Stepanek got past Edouard Roger-Vasselin 3-6 6-3 6-4.
