Show of Gandhigiri at protest against illegal colonies

LUDHIANA: As part of their peaceful protest against the building branch of the municipal corporation (MC), some RTI activists and residents of Harnam Nagar presented flowers to officials, including the MC commissioner, on Tuesday.
Residents alleged that despite several complaints, officials are turning a blind eye towards unauthorized constructions mushrooming in the city.They also accused the civic body officials of being hand-in-glove with the guilty, due to which illegal constructions are sprouting in the city. They further alleged that corrupt practices are prevalent not only in the building branch, but also in other branches of the MC.
Arvind Sharma, one of the protesters, said that they have submitted many a complaints to MC officials from the building branch about illegal construction going on in various parts of the city, but no action has been taken against violators so far. "It shows that all this is happening due to connivance between the officials and the violators," he said.
They also uploaded pictures from the protest on social networks for apprising the public at large about the corrupt practices of the MC.
Meanwhile, MC commissioner G K Singh assured the residents to look into the matter and action will be taken against illegal constructions going on in the city.
