NAGPUR: The ministry of human resources development (MHRD) would shortly register IIM Nagpur at the city’s charity commissioner’s office for the formation of society which will pave a way for future appointments. The new IIM would be registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, which then constitutes the Board of Governors (BoG) where central and state governments have their nominees, apart from some independent directors.

All IIMs are registered societies that are governed by their respective BoGs which comprise a maximum of 15, senior officials from IIM Ahmadabad, the mentor institute for IIM-N, told TOI.
BOG is a non-executive body governed by the Companies Act, 2013, and its chairman is usually the same as that of society in initial stage. This board then starts process for appointment of a director, who is sole appointing authority for teaching and non-teaching staff in these premier B-Schools. The director, who remains an employer as per Companies Act, is appointed by following proper procedure of constituting search panel on lines of vice chancellors in traditional universities.
“The process has already started from Delhi and MHRD would be coordinating it. They will send the names of members to be nominated on IIM-N society along with the chairman for purpose of registration with charity office next week,” the officials said. Till the formation of BOG, IIM-N would be under the control of IIM-A director Ashish Nanda.
Meanwhile, union HRD minister Smriti Irani and union minister for road and surface transport Nitin Gadkari are yet to confirm their availability for Sunday’s inaugural function to be held at Chitnavis Centre near Hislop College. Only chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has confirmed his participation. Even the timings have been changed to suit the dignitaries – from 11.30am to 10am.
IIM-A director and other senior officials, including dean (programmes) Ajay Pandey and senior faculty Pradyumna Khokle would be present. The VNIT would be represented by Board of Governors (BoG) chairman
Vishram Jamdar and director Narendra Chaudhari. There would be speeches by CM, Jamdar and Nanda.
The IIM-A officials said though registration and orientation programme would commence from Thursday, actual classes would begin from Monday. “The students have already started arriving and a majority of them are expected on Wednesday. We’ve kept hostels ready, but it will take some time to give finishing touches to classrooms. We would be conducting initial classes from VNIT’s civil engineering department. Even the admissions are still underway and would continue till last day owing to withdraws and other factors,” they said.
