19 injured after bus falls into stream near Karkala

As many as 19 persons, including 18 college students, suffered minor injuries when a bus fell into a stream at Gundyadka village near Karkala on Tuesday.

The bus had nearly 40 passengers most of whom were students. Thus bus was heading to Gundyaka from Karkala. The students were travelling to the Manjunath Pai Government First Grade College at Gundyadka.

The bus was moving on a narrow road, when the driver veered the vehicle to the left to give way to another oncoming vehicle around 9.30 a.m.

Since the soil was wet and little loose due to the rain, the bus slowly fell into a 20-ft-ditch.

Soon, residents from the village rushed to help the passengers.

The police and personnel of the Fire and Emergency Services also took part in the rescue operations.

Treatment

The injured were rushed to hospitals in Karkala.

“All the 19 persons suffered minor injuries. Of the 19 persons, 18 have already been discharged from the hospitals. Only one 19-year-old girl is yet to recover from the shock of the accident. Luckily, there was little water in the stream,” said Karkala Tahsildar Raghavendra S.

Two cranes struggled for two hours to lift the bus from the stream. A case had been registered at the Karkala Town Police Station and investigations were on, the police said.
