Police arrested 58 persons, including 10 women, all affiliated to AITUC, when they attempted to lay siege to the Office of Deputy Commissioner of Labour to highlight their demand.

Led by AITUC office-bearers Balakrishnan and Subramanian, the protestors raised slogans that highlighted their demands during a demonstration held in front of Office of Deputy Commissioner of Labour near VOC Grounds. CPI district secretary Kasi Viswanathan spoke on the labourers’ demands.

He said the officials were demanding the construction labourers to come to the office in person for starting or renewing their accounts. The welfare boards should be given autonomy and made as tripartite organisation involving the representatives of the labourers.

When the participants of the demonstration tried to lay siege to the Office of Deputy Commissioner of Labour, the police arrested the 58 persons and released them in the evening.
