AHMEDABAD: A woman filed an atrocity complaint with the Viramgam police on Sunday, accusing a group of persons of assaulting her and using abusive words for her caste.
The complaint filed by Mita Chauhan, a resident of Parkota village near Viramgam, states that she had approached the officials of Patel community hall at 1 pm on Sunday to request them to remove vehicles from the road that obstructed the path to her home.
However, a group of men started abusing her caste and asked her to leave. Her three nephews and mother intervened when she was attacked.
“She has mentioned in her complaint that even a municipal councillor had beaten her up and abused her. The group of men who attacked her on Sunday had allegedly torn up her clothes and told her that they would not let members of her caste to live in the area,” said a Viramgam police official.
Social activists said the police had registered a complaint against five people. "The family says that the policemen were approached time and again with the complaint that they were being harassed because of their caste. However, police did not register a complaint. We would take up matter with senior government officials," said an NGO official.
