co-friendly, colourless clay Ganesh idols will be made available through government effort for the coming Ganesh Chaturthi festival in the city this time.
Dr. Shivaram Karanth Pilikula Nisargadhama and the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) have joined hands to this effect.
Those who want to purchase them would have to place their orders on or before July 31 at the nisargadhama’s outlet called Parampara in the city corporation building at Mallikatta.
One would have to pay a booking fee of Rs. 100.
In addition, they would have to pay the fixed amount during delivery. The clay idols would be sold at concessional rate for those who have booked in advance.
According to S.A. Prabhakara Sharma, executive director of the nisargadhama, the idols with a height of about one ft and above would be sold. Its samples have been kept at Parampara for people to see.
The idols would be made at the artisans’ village in the nisargadhama.
He said that the objective was to prompt people to opt for eco-friendly idols and save water bodies from pollution. The nisargadhama and the board urged people to buy small idols even for public functions. This will help avoid accumulation of silt in water bodies.
Ganesh Chaturthi festival will be celebrated this year on September 17. Mr. Sharma said that pollution of water bodies while immersing paint-coated idols was a great environment concern as the publicly organised Ganesh festivals were also increasing.
