By design

MUMBAI fashionistas have long bemoaned the loss of Le Mill, at Wadi Bunder, since it downed shutters last year. It was one of the city’s most beautiful boutiques and had been rewarded multiple architectural and design awards. Incidentally, it was also Sonam Kapoor’s absolute favourite shopping haunt. But the large space at the former rice mill had few drop-ins, and eventually only a smaller avatar at Warden Road remained. But we have just confirmed that only last Thursday, Le Mill’s owners Cecelia Morelli Parikh and Julie Lemarie have signed on the dotted line for another venue. The large space above Colaba’s Indigo Deli, that formerly housed the House of Raro, will be Le Mill’s new and spectacular home. The charming lanes of Colaba overlooking the Gateway of India seem to suit this designmad lifestyle store perfectly.

Speed of sound

WITH Ferrari all set to return to India — the Prancing Horse is opening a dealership in August in the BKC — now is as good a time as any to wonder the whereabouts of Ashish Chordia. Not too long ago Chordia and his firm Shreyans Motors represented the pick of global luxury auto brands including Ferrari, Porsche, Maserati and Ducati. But as complaints of non-delivery and sloppy service against his company piled on, including one from Gautam Singhania, Chordia beat a hasty retreat. The big-ticket brands bowed out of partnering with him. But Chordia remains unfazed. He has managed to lure Danish sound company Bang & Olufsen into India. Chordia is apparently in the United States currently, and just to prove that wonders will never cease, he is reportedly getting into some kind of automotive business there.

Flying the coup

LAST week this diarist had reported that the very talented Mathieu Gugumus Leguillon has decided to move lock, stock and smoking barrels back to France from where he hails. We had said the reason behind this move was because after eight years in Mumbai, he was missing home. But we’ve just been updated otherwise. Mathieu is indeed in France on a short vacances, he will be back in Mumbai thereafter and looking for another space that will hone his masterly skills in fashion. It seems a monetary dispute broke between Bungalow 8’s Maithili Ahluwalia and ‘Gugu’ (as his friends call him) and his only option was out.

Dressing Pakistan

THE beautiful and acclaimed fashion designer Masaba Gupta is floating on cloud nine these days. She has been invited to Pakistan to present a fashion show for the very first time. Gupta, along with New Delhi’s seasoned couturiers Tarun Tahiliani and Gaurav Gupta, have been invited to show at the posh Pearl Intercontinental hotel in Lahore on August 30. Gupta says she agreed in a heartbeat. “I’m really excited. I’ve never been there but I’m already getting emails from girls who want to meet me and see my stuff,” she adds. Gupta is talking all her famous prints—her palm motifs to her candies— as Pakistanis especially adore prints. “I love that Pakistanis are not lazy, they really make an effort to dress up.” Hopefully they won’t be lazy shoppers either.

Tailpiece

A deputy commissioner of police, who was in news lately after his senior scolding him was caught on camera, has become the talking point in cop circles for trying to make amends and unwittingly making a mistake instead. He has confirmed his acceptance of posting to two different departments in two different cities. On one hand, he agreed to the director general of police asking him to move to Nashik and on the other, to the Home Department, under the chief minister, asking him to be posted in Nagpur. Now both the CM’s office and the police department are in a fix.
