Three youths mistaken for robbers, thrashed

According to the Mahudha taluka police, the rumors about an active gang of robbers, the Dafer gang, has left most villages in the district edgy and suspicious of passersby.

Three youths from Ahmedabad’s Odhav area were held hostage and assaulted by villagers of Faloli in Mahudha taluka of Kheda district on Sunday, after being mistaken to be the dreaded Dafer gang of robbers. The police, however, rescued and admitted the youths to an Ahmedabad hospital.

According to the Mahudha taluka police, the rumors about an active gang of robbers, the Dafer gang, has left most villages in the district edgy and suspicious of passersby. On Saturday evening, the three youths from Ahmedabad, Hemraj Khatik, 22, Chetan Marwardi, 26 and Nathu Marwadi, 21, had arrived in Kheda from Ahmedabad to visit the Dashama temple in Minawada village. Police said the three had “struck a deal” with a local trader for three swords to be placed in the temple of their individual homes for performing puja.

However, when the trader asked them to stay for one day for them, they decided to spend the night in Kathlal village.

On their way from Minawada to Kathlal, while crossing the Faloli village post on Saturday night, a group of villagers intercepted them. “The villagers asked them for their details and when the three said that they were returning after a visit to the Dashama temple, the villagers let them off. However, on Sunday, they returned to Minwada to collect the swords arranged by the trader. On their way back, the villagers stopped them again and demanded to see their ID cards. When they could not produce them, the villagers forcibly searched their jeep and found the swords,” a police officer said.

Suspecting them to be the robbers, a gang of about 12 men dragged them to a nearby animal shed and mercilessly beat them, tying them with ropes.

However, the Mahudha police arrived at the scene to intervene.
