AIDS control drive

: District Collector M.G. Rajamanickam has directed the health department to intensify AIDS control drive in the camps of migrant labourers in the district. In a meeting convened at the district collectorate here on Tuesday, the collector also directed the city corporation to take corrective measures to streamline the distribution of nutritional food to children.

Protest against tree cutting

: Vyttila RSAC Road Residents’ Association has protested against destruction of dozens of fruit-bearing trees, vegetables and other plants that were planted and tended to by people of the locality. Its secretary G.S. Gopakumar said that this was done at the behest of an adjacent building complex. The greening drive was done to prevent people from disposing of their garbage here.

Rights Foundation demands

: The views of people who want to ensure safety of those who use roads and public places where street dogs abound must be heard when discussing methods to end the threat posed by street dogs, Ernakulam district committee of Human Rights Foundation has demanded. Its secretary Segi Mutheril said that people who express concern about children and pedestrians prone to being bitten by rabies-infested dogs are often verbally abused and shouted down by animal-rights’ activists.

Details on bank

Terms and conditions must be written on bank account books just like in chitty pass books, Ernakulam Merchants’ Association has demanded. This is crucial since different banks function in different ways and charge varied rates for transactions. Very often, money deposited in savings account is debited by some banks without providing details, the association’s general secretary Leo Paul said.
